In the Shadow of the Valley Ho Part I

We're tickled pink that the Hotel Valley Ho has been able to open its doors again with a swank new renovation of this classic old Scottsdale resort. With fun names like Day-O, The Americana, Granada, Capri and Shalimar Sands, the idea of these small apartment complexes in Central Scottsdale was clearly to evoke an exotic resort lifestyle made popular by the nearby (but demolished) Safari resort and the Valley Ho. These multifamily dwellings exemplify the midcentury Scottsdale look by using lots of textile block, unique steel staircases, tropical landscaping, wide open spaces, and of course low-pitched roofs. Its easy to see how hot these apartments have become in recent years by comparing these photos from Summer 2007 to some shots from Winter 2005. This garden apartment district is currently under study by the Scottsddale Historic Preservation Commission to determine historic significance and possible historic overlay. If accomplished, it will be the first garden apartment overlay of its kind.
