About two months ago I got a phone call that the house Ralph Haver built and
lived in with his family on 11th Place was on Craigslist as a FSBO. I asked
some questions and then arranged a showing with the Danelys
). I really was not at all in the position to buy
another house and initially was just curious to see the inside. The Danleys
didn't seem to mind arranging a little tire kicking tour for me so we met
over there the next afternoon.
The house from the street was a little rough but overall not in that bad of
shape. Then we went inside. While the tenants had kept it fairly tidy they
managed to cover up every single window and source of light in the entire
house. Inside the house was almost all original; cabinets, windows,
built-ins, light fixtures, etc. To be honest, it was a little weird
thinking of Ralph walking around this place in his underwear, standing in
front of the open fridge drinking milk from the carton, brushing his teeth,
eating dinner with his family... I was overwhelmed with a feeling of
sadness to see the state of his family home. I'm not sure exactly when he
moved out but it has suffered many years of neglect.
The backyard looked like the aftermath of a tornado and the guest room
(bucky's studio??) was even worse. After some discussion with the Danleys,
the Kings and a few other MoPho's I felt an obligation to do two things. 1.
Not let some investor snatch up this property and perform the stucco,
granite countertop & hardwood floor fix-up and 2. Return it to it's former
I am in the middle of two Haver re-habs and just two weeks from launching a
software application I've been developing out my own pocket for almost two
years, so when we talked to the owner and learned that the renters wanted to
stay and were paying enough rent to cover the mortgage we made an offer.
They accepted the offer, it went into escrow and after a few hiccups we
closed and are the new owners of this historic property. All is good and
RadBrad has a big smile on his face, goal # 1 accomplished. Then, and this
is where it get interesting, I go over to collect rent and establish a new
lease figuring I can hang on it and do the restoration at a later date.
After a brief conversation I find out the tenants have no money and haven't
paid rent for the last couple of months, a little piece of information
withheld from the previous owners.
We really tried to work with the tenets to keep them there, even letting
them pay weekly but on Friday I showed up again to try to collect rent and
they had snuck off in the middle of the night Thursday leaving the place in
So here we are, goal #1 accomplished but the place need some major cleanup.
I would still like to wait until my schedule frees up a bit to perform the
major restoration but it needs a good scrub down, some paint and lots of
general cleanup. Alison and I have arranged the Save-a-Haver work party and
are working on a to-do list for anyone who would like to contribute to the
cleanup. I will be providing lunch and refreshments both Saturday and
