A Fine Vine

Postby JDL on Fri Dec 02, 2011 12:30 pm

Not to turn this into a gardening forum, but after a long search I believe I've found a vine to fit some tough requirements and it might also work for MoPho's out there looking to add some green to their block walls this fall. Bignonia capreolata, aka Crossvine, aka Tangerine Beauty has the following characteristics:

-Takes full sun AND reflected sun;
-Evergreen;
-Can climb w/o trellis;
-Relatively low litter.

Apparently it can climb like catsclaw but without the damage, and is supposed to attract hummingbirds....but not bees (good for the little lady). The cost of custom trellises just wasn't making sense so hopefully this plant can live up to the hype. Planting 4 today!

Nice tip, thanks. All gardening posts are welcome here as long as they re relevant to the desert southwest. :-)

Doing great so far, but the real test will be when June rolls around 8) . Already lots of new growth and flowers. It can use some assistance climbing, as it's not as aggressive as cat's claw. However, I don't think a full trellis system is necessary as it is latching to the wall in places. I'm just going to add some fishing line in places temporarily until it's established.

You bet, I will get some pics up this weekend. Vines are doing well, but do need some assistance getting established so I need to get crackin' on a makeshift trellis (AKA fishing line).
