Welcome, Pisces, I bet you'll enjoy out MARKETPLACE and DIY boards. The East Sunnyslope neighborhoods as a whole are not identified as Havers yet however there is at least one custom Haver up on the mountain, I have heard. Slump block I believe? Haven't been inside, myself.

Hello! My name is Marsha. I live between Shea/Cactus on 85th Street. We've been told that a "student" of Frank Lloyd Wright designed our house - there are several in our subdivision that are similar in style - floor to ceiling windows - flat roof from the front, but once inside a pitched ceiling. Wondering if anyone has an idea of who this "student" was...starting a remodel - trying to stay true to the modernism, but for costs are going to stucco the addition - are we crazy - current house is slump block, which will stay as is...thoughts?

Hi! Photos would help. You can post them in a new thread. Look for the "upload attachment" button at the end of the message composition window. Make sure the photos have been resized for web viewing. Look forward to it!

Hi, I am Christopher and I was lucky enough have both of the Kings as teachers at the Art Institute of Phoenix. Both have inspired me tremendously and have convinced me (subconsciously) I need to be more modern. I love the ranch Havers and any mod furniture with those sexy curvaceous forms. I have a background in Graphic Design, but once I earned my BA of Graphic Design and after scraping by in my html classes with Alison I took it upon myself to learn more of the language and trade. I am currently designing websites and various graphics with metrocreativegroup.com and cleverarrow.com. My personal portfolio is studiolxv.com, although my real love is modern illustration, you can see some of that stuff here http://www.cleverarrow.com/solutions.htm.

I'm currently looking at 1220 E ALICE AVENUE, Phoenix, AZ 85020, (EDITED: which was said to be a Haver from 1968) in the ad, although I have no idea how it or if it will go through, but one can dream.

Hi Christopher!! Not sure if those homes in the 'Slope are Havers (no documentation has surfaced) however they sure are cute nonetheless! Good luck!

Alison, Oh whoops, yeah it is kinda cute huh. Probably not going to jump on it, i'd rather save for the real thing.

Plus I have my eye on this badboy.

Hello Modern Phoenix!

I've been hanging around this site for some time, but don't post very often because so many of you have already talked about many of the things I've found interesting. I'm an architect, who worked for Will Bruder for many years. I've also taught architectural design studios at ASU for many years. Most recently, I've been teaching a seminar entitled "Meditations on Making," which explores the way architects use materials and detailing to inform their design processes. I also started a blog recently; I posted it in the links section. My initial posts talk about some of my experiences working on projects in Denver and Metro Phoenix area, and the lessons I've learned along the way.

I've been a huge fan of midcentury modern architecture since my days at school; my sophomore year at ASU, I had the pleasure of seeing the Al Beadle exhibit that became the basis for the must-read book "Constructions." I was stunned find out that work of that caliber had been done in phoenix! Since then, I've learned so much more about the fine designers and architects who have contributed to this unique place we all call home. A special thanks to the modern phoenix community for helping design lovers share information. Keep up the good work!

I am a artist, abstract expressionist, and primarily do large scale vases. I also do some interior design. I particularly appreciate the clean lines and efficiency of modern form. My friend, also an artist introduced me to Modern Phoenix, and I am delighted to see what you are doing.

Hey All - I just signed up so I thought I would introduce myself and answer the optional questions

Your name, of course
Mike
What you do to keep busy
I'm a Historic Preservation student at the University of Oregon which keeps me REALLY busy. My expertise is in recent-past and modern architecture as well as New Deal architecture in the Pacific Northwest.
Why you love modernism
I am not sure. I have always been attracted to the striking geometric forms of modernism. I like simple things. I also grew up on military bases, many of which are like little museums of modernism.
What kind of neighborhood/house you live in
I split my time between a 1919 bungalow surrounded by similar houses in Eugene, Oregon and a brand new shpancy contemporary condo surrounded by little war cottages in a working class neighborhood in Portland, Oregon. My parents live in the Phoenix area in a bland, vaguely mediterranean McMansion.
Your thoughts about Phoenix, local design, and why you live here
I don't live here (er... there) but my parents do! Phoenix is full of great architecture and is incredibly interesting to me from an academic standpoint. I am not sure if it is somewhere I could really live. I don't even have a driver's license. It's great to visit though.
How you found out about ModernPhoenix.net
I was doing research on Al Beadle's Traid (aka case study apartment #1) and stumbled upon you guys.
What you'd like to see the ModernPhoenix community become
It's already such a fantastic resource. I'd like it to continue being that. There is a similar, but less active, community for Portland. I wish it were more like this site, though Portland isn't as chalk full of fun modern architecture as the valley of the sun.

Anyway, great site! Thanks for having me! I look forward to seeing you around!

Hey everyone, anxious to build on to my recent knowledge of mid-century and modern architecture and owning a home part of it.

Right now I'm a part time photographer, and a full time architectural consultant. I spend most of the week days working on large hospitals and training people how to use the software we develop them on.

This last week we purchased a 1948 home just north of the Coronado historic district, but still south of Thomas. (believe it or not, theres a small little area still.) Right on Edgemont, title indicates that it would be in the South Country Club Manor subdividion.

Anyway, Christy and I have been looking for the past several months, or since March when we found out that we were having a baby. The photography live work place simply wouldn't cut it much longer. After owning one of the stucco monsters, nothing less than quaint, clean, and pre 70's would do.

For me, I love the modernistic style for it's classic clean and cool look. And when I say cool, I don't mean, 1980's cool. . .I mean relaxed but sophisticated. I like that many people screw it up and often confuse it for fancy loud and cluttered. To me that's what separates the loves from the likes. Most people that I have met that simply like it have over done it and cluttered it and now it no longer looks right. It's a difficult look to maintain because it's often easy to get overly excited and add too much. So to me, my favorite part is when something can be so simple and still very exciting.

Back to my place. The home was recently remodeled. Luckily, the previous owner was a bit older herself, and so she keeps all the corner arched openings, the coved and coffered ceilings, and all the little accents of milk delivery boxes, front door side box windows and mail slots. Once we get moved in I will be sure to upload some photos.

The yard and guest house need a bit of attention, but nothing that a new mom and dad shouldn't be able to take care of in good time. The neighborhood is acceptable, it doesn't have the lush greenery that some of the other areas have, but in general, most of the homes have well cared for yards. Most of the time if feels more like grandmas old neighborhood, and less like a vintage family neighborhood. . . .if that makes sense.

I found the forum trying to find out who the builder/architect was of the homes in that particular area. And thats still the quest that I'm on. I know that it wont be any of the big names, and will probably be pretty tough to track down, but never the less I thought I would give it a shot.

Hope to hear some fantastic stories, and I will be sure to update my information as we get into the house and make significant changes. All the while learning from some of the best so as not to make a step that "might over do it" ;)

Thanks
Jasen
