It turns out that I am muddled and I got the day wrong, and I'm not teaching, and neither is Hector helping me out that night. So maybe I can come, or heck, the whole family!

So, brainstorm time. We will go with the idea that the structural design of the addition will be very close to what we see here. This addition is a canvas for you to optimize. The addition can blend, contrast, OR contrast dramatically. There was some discussion about offsetting the addition back a little bit, or even a separation of the master bedroom from the main house(behind the connecting hallway)with some sort of garden in it.
What materials to use?...and what color should they be? Metal? Glass?(salvaged glass from Mountain Bell??) Trendy modern, timeless modern, flavor of the week, something nobody ever thought of, radical, classy, subtle genius, blatant genius, enough to get the job done....I don't know.

Maybe spend some time on the Beade Archive for inspiration and ideas. WWBD? Beadle did remodels, additions, etc. He understood the realities of financial factors, but he also didn't appreciate his work being diluted. Blah blah blah, you know all this crap. Put on your black clothing, and...

Well, that is peculiar, my previous post was to scale.

So, here's my take on what the architect put together. The color takes a cue from the existing pool-colored glass tiles that are used on the southern face. The architect had the two volumes butt right up against each other, but I recommended a void (I called it a "time gap") between the columns. My rationale with the dramatic color break is to make the new structure as obvious as possible and not matchey-match the original. This also differs from the current floorplan in that the master bedroom (on top of the garage) is brought forward flush to the EDGE of the front porch so there is also a shift in space as well.





Comments and criticism welcomed. (I did these renderings before I had access to Shawn's shots of the plans, so please forgive the parts out of scale).

Apparently I need to familiarize myself with the new image attachment procedure. I noticed on certain resolutions the images above get hacked off. When I get home tonight I will fix it.

you should be able to click on a cropped image and have it expand to full size. at least that is what happens on my mac...

I should say the images I posted get cropped. Alison's images expand properly. Mine don't seem to. oh well, I will mess with it tonight.

I inserted the first two images inline and did the third as a file attachment upload because I knew I wanted it to scroll.

A few comments, each probably either nonsense or obvious.

It took a while to get used to the idea of the addition extending the length of the house. (For those not at the meeting, the obvious solution of an "L" to preserve the front was nixed because of the wash running behind the house.)

Next best, as Alison emphasized, was to make sure of a contrast between old and new. The symmetry of the original, however, makes the addition tricky. How to make it one house, while letting Beadle's original structure stand out clearly?

One thing worth preserving are the slits facing east and west from the front porch; if the addition encroached on the west-facing slit at all, it wouldn't feel right–I'd want to see the same thing from the porch, looking east or west.

An odd number of elements, 3-2, to my eye tends to integrate the addition with the original; an even number 3-3, might help emphasize their separation. (I've gone back and forth on this one; given the smaller scale of the addition, 2 elements might work nicely to distinguish the addition.)

We all owe Lynda our heartfelt thanks; she is surely out a fortune by not replacing it with a stone-clad monstrosity. Shawn's long weeks and Alison's swift pen have made this one of modphx's finest hours.
