Storage shed

Postby dimone2 on Tue May 08, 2012 6:11 am

One of the major issues with my new Beadle house is there's absolutely no outdoor storage. That needed to be rectified as soon as possible, but the ready-made sheds from Home Depot or Lowes just don't fit with the house. I love Modern Shed, but that simply wasn't in the budget. So, what does a poor architect do? Become a framer, of course!

First, need a plan.

I went through a few renditions, trying to keep it interesting, cheap, usable, and pass it by the wife. The first thing to go was the high windows, as the shed was getting to tall. I decided to use concrete footings you can get at Home Depot, and place the shed around the side of the house, in a rocky area we have.

I got a friend to help, and we started placing the footings and framing the floor. Had to make sure it was level, because there's no adjusting that later.

The first day took a little longer than expected, but we got there.

Note: no laughing by pro builders on here!

The floor was done, and the back wall framed and sheathed.

Day 2:

Since there's no room between the back wall and the fence, I had to get the siding done and painted.
The other walls could just get sheathing for now.

I need to find some doors to use up front, and may add a little more framing depending on my final decisions for the front finishes.

Today I got the HardiePanel installed on the sides, and the corrugated metal as well. I still need to trim around the metal and paint the HardiePanel.

I must have done something right! Despite the lack of a roof, and the heavy winds, my shed suffered no ill effects from yesterday's little storm/haboob. I'm going to try hard to get the walls painted and the roof on this weekend. It's tough to find time in my schedule to get it done.

You've done a fine job minus the important step of looking at the City of Phoenix rules for accessory buildings. You needed to keep the back wall 3' from your property line. Doing so would have also made it easier for you to assemble. Nice work otherwise.

Actually, I have a corner lot. The City of Phoenix code says I need to keep my accessory structure (shed) back 10' from the street.

Got a little further on the shed. MIt's slow going trying to find time, especially since I don't want to go rent a nailer for 2 hours of work or less, so I'm swinging a hammer.
The sides are painted, and the roof is nearly completely framed.

That is coming along too nicely to be a storage shed! How about throwing in a door, floor to ceiling windows, and a skylight or two? You'll have a great office or a get away from whoever I want to in the house place

Actually, there's going to be two doors in the front, a small window between them, and the roof will be solar gray translucent panels to allow light in.

At some point I need to run power to the shed as well. I've drilled a hole between the doors in the front frame/flooring to allow conduit to run down to the ground, and then I'd run it underground over to the house panel. I talked to my electrician about it when he was out for something else. Then I can stop charging my cordless tools in the laundry room, which would make my wife much happier!

Friday night's project was to get the roof panels up. They are transparent gray corrugated panels, to allow light in the shed. It took longer than expected due to a spacing screw up on my part, which lead to having to remove and reinstall all the panels but 1. And of course the wind decided to kick up on roof panel day!

Got busy this morning. The front HardiePanel is mounted and painted, the doors are framed, one of the doors is hung, and the roof fascia boards are primed and attached. Whew!

Tomorrow I hope to hang the other door, mount the front corrugated metal panel, and possibly paint the fascia boards.

Withe the exception of the window and the trims, the shed's about done! The trim will take a bit. I need to trim around the doors, the building corners, around the metal panels, etc... I also need to build some shelving inside.
