Looking for Cliff May, Palmer & Krisel, Jones & Emmo

Postby joe on Thu Jun 02, 2005 11:42 pm

I am looking for Cliff May, Palmer & Krisal, Jones & Emmons designed tract homes in the Phoenix area. Any known locations?

As you may know, Cliff May had thousands of his prefab modern tract homes built through out the west from '51-56, with known tracts in California, Washington, Oregon, Colorado, Nevada, Texas, Missouri. I have evidence of his homes built in Tucson, so it's a safe bet Phoenix has several tracts.

Palmer & Krisel of Alexander fame in Palm Springs and Socal also designed modernist tract homes in the '50s and '60s for merchant builders in Phoenix.

Lastly, Jones & Emmons of Eichler fame designed several modern tract homes for Pardee-Philips who built in Las Vegas, Phoenix, and Tucson, as well as SoCal.

I'll post some images soon to you can identify them

May in Tucson

Postby tucsonmod on Fri Jun 03, 2005 2:28 pm

Hi Joe,

Being in Tucson, I'd be real curious to know where in town some Cliff May homes may be hiding.

Let me know and I'd be happy to shoot some pics for everyone.

I have a vintage photo of a Tucson Cliff May from House & Home, Feb 1954. I'll scan it and post it. It looks like mine, but will use more brick in the exterior than the signature redwood board and batten. It's a tract home, so there should be a cluster of several.

My parents live out on the south end of Tucson, on Escalante. Visiting last a couple years ago, I remember seeing thousands of MCM tracts. I'll be down in the fall and hope to tour some more. Lot's of potential for affordable modern homes down there.

I happened upon and have been talking with the author of this book the last couple of days. Also I found some images of a Tucson Cliff May home. Some of the homes in the San Fran area are phenomenal !

No comment, just placed here for discussion. This was found in a 1955 Arizona Republic Article.
