Phoenix Modern vs. Palm Springs Modern

Postby Hans64 on Sat Mar 17, 2012 1:54 pm

Hello,
I just finished renovating a Scottsdale mid century modern condo which I use as a vacation home (I live in Portland which is great but rainy). I've enjoyed driving around to a lot of the neighborhoods in Phoenix-Scottsdale that are listed on this site.

One thing that has been interesting to me is comparing mid century modern architecture in the area to that in Palm Springs. There are similarities of course but also significant differences. Here's a few off the top of my head (which mostly apply to homes):

Palm Springs:
Lots and lots of bright white exteriors
Edgier roof angles--butterfly, shed, a-frame
Oriented to outdoor living in a very strong way
Highly stylized (some would say artificial looking) landscaping

Phoenix:
Muted exteriors--sandblasted block or desert colors, rarely bright white
Modern designs based on ranch house precedents with rustic design elements--block, rusted steel
Less oriented to outdoor living (remodels often address this)
Understated, natural landscaping

What are some differences you recognize? I find the approach in Phoenix to be perhaps more eclectic and interesting...

I have to say I'm disappointed that these forums aren't more interactive--my post on this topic got 100+ reads and 0 replies. Most of the other posts receive 0 to 2 on average. Unless it is about a real estate listing it doesn't appear that many on this site are interested in discussing modernism.

Hans, a funny thing happened when facebook came along...

;-)

Most of my interesting conversations with other MoPhos happen over there. Your post was great and insightful.

Well I'll reply... Yes, the points made on the differences between P.S. and PHX modern is well taken. My take on the landscape is directly related to climate. Although we both get the extreme temps they actually get regular seasonal rain as where we obviously cherish our 8-12 day a year of the wonderful moisture from above. As far as structure I think it is only due to the P.S. Modern houses sort of being preserved from their origin. As where a lot, not all, of the PHX moderns are more recently being resurrected and we here in PHX have a little more "freedom" as far as personal style with out having all of our Modern buddies telling us not to change certain features and elements of our homes. I see it as any bit of remod that gets it at least closer to the Modern PHX style is a plus.

Palm Springs=Teacher
Phoenix=Student

However, recently like the last decade. The Arizona School of thought or desert school is really paving the way for a Arizona style.

There is a fine line between great design and something amateur/cartoonish. The key is awareness...
