Landscaper Referrals

Postby SimpleStyle on Thu Jul 14, 2011 8:09 pm

Anyone have a great landscaper they just love? I am in the market for someone that actually knows plants and understands how to keep a yard "healthy".

I don't want just another "mow and blow" type person or company. I am looking for someone that actually takes the time to make sure sprinklers are working, understands how to set a timer box, knows how long and how frequently plants need to be watered, cares about cleaning up grass and weeds growing in plants, knows how to properly trim foliage and can communicate what needs to be done rather than me having to constantly tell them.

Does this person exist or is this just another one of those urban legends?

Xerophytic design.

We take care of our own desert landscape (it is enjoyable to us), but if we ever decide to have this work done by someone else, it will be Thomas Park.
I have had numerous discussions with Thomas, and he understands what should be done for proper maintenance - pruning, trimming, etc. His approach is quarterly maintenance that is done correctly. NOT weekly maintenance where they hack everything with hedge clippers and simply blow all of the litter into the middle of your street (to then get blown back into your yard). His prices will be higher than the 'weekly' price you will pay for basic hired labor. You will be paying for expertise, trained labor, and a healthier landscape as a result - and it will be worth it.

Note: I do not think he maintains non-desert type landscapes (i.e. grass)
For every complex question there is a simple answer, and it is wrong.

Thomas is an exceptionally nice guy too.

Which makes me think of Troy Bankord, another extremely nice guy who happens to be another landscape designer. His site says he does maintenence as well. Troy's vocabulary as a designer includes more grass & trees than Thomas' so he might be more appropriate for a property with irrigation/grass/etc. http://www.troybankorddesign.com/

I'd talk to both Thomas and Troy as a starting point.

Thank you all for your referrrals.

I had decided to knock on a neighbors door and ask them who takes care of their somewhat Japanese style yard as it always looks healthy and nicely manicured. They gave me the referral to their yard crew and I couldn't be happier with the work they have done so far on mine (and very reasonably might I add:). I will keep all your referrals just in case. Thanks again!

I am currently using Suite Design Group to do the design work. They are a small local firm that does some really cool stuff. I will post some pictures when I am done.
