RE: Planning Commission Hearing on 9/26/07 – On Bank Site Rezoning – URGENT
It had been contemplated that pending discussions between the developer (Opus) and various stakeholders, the reference P.C. hearing would be continued until October. Now, however, it has been confirmed that the case will be heard on 9/26/07.
As filed the case on the total bank site (4.78 acres) will revise the zoning from single family residential, surface parking and commercial to all commercial. If the rezoning application is successful, the open space will be gone, the mushroom columns will be removed, surface parking will be reduced, and most all of the current mature trees and landscaping will be uprooted.
The original proposal was for retail and a massive 56 foot tall four-story structure that will have 57 condo units. While the developer has indicated he is willing to consider some changes, the resultant project is still too tall and massive. Furthermore, the Chase’s out of state parent has still not indicated acceptance of any long term arrangement to save the bank building itself.
On July 10, 2007, the Camelback East Village Planning Committee rejected the developer’s proposal by a vote of 11 to 5. Now the case moves to the Planning Commission which has historically favored developers over neighborhoods. We need as strong a showing at the Planning Commission as possible.
